this book is also great for any animal lover. I don't want to give it away so , I can't tell you.I think the authors purpose was to entertain. In the journey there is much excitement and tragedy. literally. Her sentence fluency was amazing. I would recommend this book to boys and girls. The story begins on the side of the road with a pregnant cat being abandoned.The cat wanders in the forest until she found a house with an old abused dog named ,Ranger. It was so happy I cried tears of joy.
I loved how she wrote it. It's perfect for children in any grade. The Underneath , by Kathi Applet is a story about three calico cats , an old dog , and an abusive owner. My favorite part is the end. Her adjectives where impeccable.
Thank you, Kathi Appelt, for this wonderfully beautiful, and yes sad, book. Will I read this to my son when he is 8, 10 or 12. But when I saw this book at the library, I just had to get it. Kathi Appelt has done a beautiful job of relaying love, evil, and finally freedom. Kids are a lot more resilient and understanding of things than I think we give them credit for sometimes. Either way, I eventually will read it with my son and then we will go out and try to rescue yet another dog that is kept chained, tied, or small penned. I am not only a mom, but also a volunteer with children's and animal causes. This book completely shows that.

Being a stay-at-home mom to a lively 28-month-old, I don't have time to brush my teeth, much less read a book. One such animal cause is Dogs Deserve Better, in which we try to get people to understand that dogs do deserve better than life on a chain or in a pen. Probably more likely 12 than 8; but who knows.
I've read a lot of books, and this book is by far the best book I've ever read. The mother calico cat crawls up and stays with him. He shoots anything that's steps into his yard ever since he was a boy. A calico cat hears this poor song and follows the song and finds a skinny old bloodhound chained to a house.
( 5th Grade If you want to find out what happens you will have to read the book. They never broke that rule until one day Puck woke up and his family was still sleeping he thought it look harmless so he went out into the underneath. She is a poet, author, and a teacher. She wrote many other different books including alley cats meow, and the bubba and beau series. And a mama calico cat and 2 baby kittens. After a while the mother cat has 2 kittens.They name there kittens Puck and Sabine and they were born in the the underneath of rangers abusive owner name gar face house.

It sucked me in right away.This amazing book is about a poor hound named ranger who is abused by his dissolving owner. So Puck and Sabine have a very important rule "do not go out of the underneath.
Deep under an old pine lies a creature, trapped in a clay jar for 1000 years, waiting for revenge. I wish I could like this book, but I just couldn't. The stories intertwine to tell a haunting story about love, loss and betrayal. Ranger invites the cat to share his space Underneath. Nothing much happy occurs in the plot, just lots and lots of misery.
Along comes a calico cat, heavy with kittens and abandoned by her owners. It's safe in the Underneath and the kittens are warned never to leave. In the bayou lives an old aligator, hungry for flesh. The subplots are confusing until they come together in the end and I found the book kind of boring and unmemorable. he Underneath is a safe haven under a titled house in the bayou on the Texas/Louisiana border where Ranger, an old abused hound dog lies waiting for his owner to throw him some scraps of food.
Ranger, the calico cat and her two kittens, Sabine and Puck, are a happy little family, hiding from Gar Face, Ranger's neglectful, abusive owner. This is a dark book, probably not suited for young children.
